About the Role

The Director of Product Development (PD) is responsible for leading the innovation and product development initiatives for the division, understanding market trends and the needs of consumers and customers for our portfolio of brands and products. The Director of PD leads innovation in Coats & Clark division categories with the end goal to deliver on growth and the annual financial targets.

Duties & Responsibilities

Planning:

  • Develop, communicate and implement a continuous pipeline of product & innovation ideas to deliver on the company vision and strategy, set in coordination with the Division GM and Management teams. 

  • Lead the process to fully brief the Creative Team on new product developments, key product packaging deliverables, and agree on necessary timelines for successful and participative team planning.

  • Partner with Key Account Managers and Marketing to establish bespoke customer growth plans for major accounts, look for white space to win shelf share and relevant opportunities for the division.

  • Lead the PD team, champion the New Product Development (NPD) process and it’s seamless execution and manage the team workload and the PD priorities effectively.

Engagement & Execution:

  • Analyze consumer/shopper behaviour, competitive initiatives and sales/distribution channels to formulate winning strategies that will increase the effectiveness of delivering our brand propositions and significantly grow market share:

  • Design trade and consumer marketing activities needed to either defend our existing core business or successfully deliver on new product launches.

  • Effectively managing “Big Ideas” priorities regarding “go to market” strategy and timelines, and tactical marketing plan to meet business results expectations.

  • Uncover consumer and shopper insights and focus on relevant market trends for our industry that will lay the foundation for future innovative value propositions.

  • Lead communication with suppliers with the support of Procurement/Purchasing for new product development and innovation ideas by establishing a positive relationship.

  • Ensure (with the support of the Quality Director) that all Quality Standards and Processes are followed to deliver the best product to consumers and customers.

  • Manage and audit regularly post-mortem results of New Product launches and proposes any product enhancement if results are off-target.

  • Actively supports the annual sku lifecycle assessment process (DNPX) to deliver the best performance out of the active SKUs and propose the final list of items that should be dropped on an annual basis.

  • Lead the delivery of presentations to the Key Account Managers in preparing product and annual line review presentations for key customer meetings (focus on major accounts), general market launch templates and actively participate in customer presentations when necessary.

  • Showcase a high level of collaboration or direct leadership in cross-departmental strategic product development projects (cross departmental projects) to leverage best practices and encourage cross-functional or cross-category efficiencies.

  • Participate or lead other special projects as assigned by the Division GM.

Reporting & Analysis:

  • Quarterly Product profitability review

  • New product development performance vs targets

  • Annual DNPX portfolio review (active/ and to drop SKUs)

Other:

  • Work in a safe manner and meet company safety requirements.


Qualifications

  • Business management degree with focus in marketing (MBA is a plus)

  • 5+ years of experience and proven success in leading brand consumer initiatives (consumer package goods preferred)

  • Strong communication, presentation skills and negotiation skills

  • Entrepreneur and creative mentality

  • Good planning, organizational, and time management skills

  • A high degree of self-motivation, drive, and a sense of urgency

  • Strong leadership skills to manage a team

  • Excellent teamwork and collaboration capabilities

  • Strong interpersonal skills and empathy

  • Proficient computer skills (Microsoft 365, Excel, Power Point, Word, Outlook)

  • Flexibility for travel up to 20% of the time

  • Consumer packaged goods and/or craft background would be an asset
